Description: This rare print originates from: 'Joachimi Camerarii Symbolorum ac Emblematum Ethico. Politicorum. Centurie Quatuor...', (translation: Joachim Camerarius's symbolic and emblematic ethical and political work in 4 parts.) by Joachim Camerarius, dated 1697, published in Mainz by Ludovici Bourgeat. This is a rare later edition of a work first published seperately in 3 parts in 1590 (herbs and plants), 1595 (4-legged animals) and 1596 (birds and insects). In 1604 his son Ludwig added a fourth part (aquatic animals and reptiles). In 1605 Ludwig edited and renewed his father's work into one book with 4 parts. Each part has 100 charming circular emblems making a total of 400 emblems attributed to Hans Sibmacher with accompanying descriptive text. The 'Centuria Una' was in 1590 the first botanical emblem book and one of the first books to contain illustrations of plants on intaglio plates. Ref: Hunt 181; Landwehr German 166; Nissen 312.

Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is Joachim Camerarius the Younger (German 'Kammermeister') (Nuremberg 1534-1598), a German physician, botanist, and humanist scholar and his son Ludwig Camerarius (Nuremberg 1573-1651), a German statesman, lawyer, minister and head of Frederick V's government-in-exile in the Hague. The engraver of this plate Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher / Hans Sibmacher / Syber (Nuremberg ca. 1561-1611) was a German Arms painter, engraver, etcher and publisher.
