Bonne, Ingenieur-Hydrographe de la Marine.' with inset maps titled: 'Baie de Bonthain, dans L'Isle des Celebes', 'Cote Sud de Mindanao', 'Banc de Sable dangereux', 'Isles de Joseph Freewill' and 'Nouvelle Irlande'. This nautical chart / map shows New Britain, the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. It is separated from the island of New Guinea by the Dampier Strait, and from New Ireland by the St. George's Channel. The main towns of New Britain are Rabaul/Kokopo and Kimbe.
Condition: Fine; Recent hand colouring; General light age related toning; light staining in top half and boTtom margins; some small tears in margin and a few tiny pinsize holes; Seperated bottom middle fold backed.
Medium: Copperplate Engraving / etching on verge type hand laid paper with watermark; contemporary (old) hand colouring.

Artists and Engravers: Cartographer: Rigobert Bonne, (1727 - 1795), was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the French Depôt de la Marine. Engraved by Gaspard Andre.
