Description: This antique engraving originates from: A. van Otterloo, 'Japan, beschreven naar de nieuwste bronnen' (Japan, described after the latest sources), Amsterdam: Gebr. Kraay, 1860. This book is the second volume in a series entitled 'Vreemde landen en volken' (Exotic countries and people.).

Artists and Engravers: The plates are unsigned, although they are very similar to the prints in 'Narrative of Commodore Perry's Trade Expedition to the China Sea and Japan 1852-1854'. In fact, several lithographic images from this source are used and re-engraved, using other printing techniques. The prints for the Perry edition were drawn by Wilhelm Heine (1827-1885) and Eliphalet M. Brown (1816-1886).
